Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Freedom Fighter Md. Rezaul Karim Chowdhury has said that Chattogram city residents will get less waterlogging through the implementation of Baroipara canal project.

CCC Mayor said this while inspecting the progress of the 'Canal Digging from Bahaddarhat Baroipara to Karnaphuli River' project on Tuesday while interacting with the local people.

CCC Mayor said that if the canal excavation is completed, the flooding of about 10 lakh residents of 8 wards including Shulakbahar, Mohra, Bahaddarhat, Bakolia and Chaktai will be reduced a lot.  The excavated 2.9 km long canal will be 65 feet wide.  There will be two 5.5 km long roads of 20 feet and two 6 feet wide walkways on either side of the canal.

The canal will start from Baripara and pass through Noor Nagar housing, from Waizpara to Bolirhat and join the Karnaphuli river.

Project director Farhadul Alam said that the project work has been slightly delayed due to recent record rains.  Besides, there are some complications related to land acquisition.  Therefore, work is currently going on day and night to complete the project as soon as possible.

CCC Additional Chief Engineer Munirul Huda, Supervising Engineer Shaheen Ul Islam Chowdhury and project related

officials were present during the inspection.

It mentioned that the drainage master plan of Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) in 1995 recommended the digging of a 2.9 kilometer long canal from Bahaddarhat Baroipara to Karnaphuli river in order to solve the waterlogging in the region.  Almost two decades after this, in June 2014, the Baroipara canal excavation project was approved in the meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC).  After the implementation of the project, the water of the area of 2 thousand 264 hectares will be drained and flow into the Karnaphuli river.
