The Tuber Crops Research Center of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) has arranged a progress review workshop on Feed the Future Biotechnology Potato Partnership Project (Phase-1) at the Institute’s Kazi Badruddoza Auditorium on Thursday (August 13).
A detailed review of the progress of the first phase of the project and the variety development of the genetically modified (GM) potato were discussed at the workshop.
Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) Dr. Shaikh Mohammad Bokhtiar inaugurated the workshop as chief guest. BARI Director General Dr. Md. Nazirul Islam chaired the workshop while former executive chairman of BARC Dr. Mohammod Jalal Uddin and former pro-vice chancellor of Sher-e-Bangla Agriculture University Prof. Dr. Md. Shahidur Rashid Bhuiyan were present as special guest. BARI Director (Tuber Crops Research Centre) Dr. S M Shrifuzzaman presented the welcome address at the workshop.
It was informed at the workshop that during the 2009-2019 rule of the present government, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) has developed 262 high yielding varieties of different crops and 431 advanced crop management technologies. Besides, a total of 91 potato varieties have been released by BARI so far.
Our country will go further in potato production if all these varieties and technologies reach the farmer level quickly and if the disease resistant GM potato varieties are brought to Bangladesh and brought under cultivation.
