Bangladesh women secure Junior Asia Cup berth, men’s team storm into the final

Bangladesh women hockey team celebrated their qualification for the Women’s Junior Asia Cup Hockey in the first time after a 10-1 win against Indonesia in the Women's Under-21 AHF Cup in Singapore on Saturday. 

Following the women’s team success to make their room in the Junior Asia Cup Hockey, Bangladesh men’s Junior Hockey team also stormed into the final of the Junior Asia Cup Hockey defeating Chinese Taipei by 5-1 to defend their title.     

In the goal-galore match, Arpita Paul scored three goals while Irin Riya and Kona Akter joined in the celebration with a couple of goal each, Nadira, Lima and Sanjida added a piece each in the one-sided affair.   

Top four, out of seven teams from the Women’s Under-21 AHF Cup will play in the Women’s Junior Asia Cup Hockey when Bangladesh are in third position with obtaining 12 points along with Chinese Taipei and Thailand.

Bangladesh, who played five matches, left one match to play when they will take the hosts Singapore today in their last encounter and the result will decide their position.  

It is the second time Bangladesh are participating in this tournament, when in 2019 the women in red and green played first time and at their first appearance they could manage only one win and finished fifth among six teams. 

Meanwhile, men’s team, who have already qualified for the Junior Asia Cup after winning the semifinal match outplaying Chinese Taipei by 5-1 in the semifinals yesterday, moved into the final.

Bangladesh, who moved into the semifinal as Group champions, faced huge challenge in the first quarter when Chinese Taipei fought evenly with finish first 15th minute on one all draw.   

But from the second quarter, the defending champions of the competition, bounced back strongly to make rest of the game just one-way traffic when Bangladesh scored four more goals and the Chinese Taipei could not add even a goal. 

Amirul and Abdullah bagged a brace apiece when Joy scored the first goal for Bangladesh.
