US State Department Counselor Derek Chollet will discuss the coordination of responding to the Rohingya crisis and the security partnership between the US and Bangladesh during his Dhaka visit.
Chollet, arrived in Dhaka on Tuesday evening, will also discuss strengthening Dhaka-Washington cooperation in international fora during his engagement with senior Bangladeshi officials, said the office of the spokesperson at the US Department of State.
The foreign ministry said Foreign Secretary Ambassador Masud Bin Momen received him at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
He is leading a 7-member interagency delegation to visit Bangladesh on 14-15 February.
The purpose of the visit is to strengthen bilateral relations and government-to-government ties with an elevated focus on the Rohingya humanitarian response.
During the visit, the US delegation will call on the Prime Minister, and the Foreign Minister, and also will have a separate meeting with the Foreign Secretary along with senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, 15 February.
The State Department said Counselor of the U.S. Department of State Derek Chollet will lead a U.S. delegation to Bangladesh and Pakistan February 14-18 to meet with senior government officials, civil society members, and business leaders to highlight the importance of our bilateral partnership and reaffirm our countries’ shared goals."
“Counselor Chollet will be joined by Clinton White, Counselor of the U.S. Agency for International Development, and Elizabeth Horst, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, and, in Bangladesh only, Beth Van Schaack, Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice.
“In Bangladesh, the delegation will meet with senior Bangladeshi officials to discuss coordination and response to the Rohingya refugee crisis, strengthening cooperation in international fora, and advancing the security partnership between the United States and Bangladesh.”
