Bangladesh squad lacks surprises

Published : 15 May 2024 09:19 PM

Just before the T20 World Cup squad announcement, Bangladesh played a series against Zimbabwe. Before the squad announcement on Tuesday, the selectors had little choice but to pick from that squad. Therefore, there's room to discuss the top order, which underperformed in the Zimbabwe series. The selectors have taken a gamble on Litton Das. The hope, of course, is that he will rediscover his touch, a prospect that inspires optimism.

The case of Saifuddin merits further discussion. His presence is crucial for maintaining balance in the team; his skillset is simply irreplaceable. While his bowling in the final Zimbabwe matches raised concerns, judging him solely on those outings might be a tad hasty. The selectors could have afforded to be more lenient and demonstrate greater faith in his abilities. Mehedi Hasan Miraz's absence leaves a significant void. His experience, combined with his well-rounded contributions in bowling, batting, and fielding, along with his infectious positivity, were invaluable assets to the team.

There could be discussions about Saifuddin and Miraz's omissions. However, strong arguments can't be made. They're not in the team despite strong performances. If this team wants to achieve success in the World Cup, a lot of hard work is required.

After all the doubts regarding injury, Taskin Ahmed remains in the squad. He's not only part of the team but is also deputy skipper, and if fit, he'll play. If not, there's a clear alternative.

Taskin has been a long-serving member of the national team. With no other clear candidate for the role, Taskin was chosen. However, the captain or vice-captain wasn't selected through the proper process. This isn't the responsibility of the new selection committee, but rather a lack of prior competition within the team for leadership roles. While Taskin previously captained a successful Durdanto Dhaka team that only won one match, he's now vice-captain of the Bangladesh team. Still, more competition in this regard would have been preferable.

The situation is transparent; everyone knows the plan. Such clarity is crucial for the team. Ultimately, this is our national team, and we all want them to succeed.

The World Cup squad is devoid of surprises. There was also a relative lack of competition for spots. In contrast, India and Australia had several talented players who narrowly missed out. Bangladesh's selection, however, is largely based on established names.

While it may seem harsh, a significant portion of the team is currently underperforming.

This is the undeniable truth; several players will enter the World Cup lacking form. Amongst the batsmen, only Mahmudullah is demonstrating good form.

The team's bowling and fielding in Zimbabwe were also far from impressive. If this team aspires to World Cup glory, a significant improvement in performance is essential.
