Veteran journalist A K Hiru, who was also a freedom fighter and Khulna bureau chief of Daily Bangladesh Post and former president of Khulna Press Club (KPC), passed away on Sunday at his 70.
He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at Shaheed Sheikh Abu Naser Specialized Hospital in Khulna city on Sunday noon.
A K Hiru, also a former general secretary of Khulna Union of Journalists (KUJ) and former joint secretary general of undivided BFUJ, had been suffering from kidney diseases for the last couple of years. He has been undergoing kidney dialysis regularly every month.
He was admitted to Shaheed Sheikh Abu Naser Specialized Hospital when he suddenly suffered in brain stroke about a month ago. He was under treatment at ICU in the hospital and his condition was critical.
Childless journalist A K Hiru left behind his wife, relatives and a host of admirers to mourn his death.
Hailing from Kheshra village under Tala upazila in Satkhira district, the journalist used to live in Khulna since 1980’s decade.
He started his career in different local dailies. He had worked at Channel i, Daily Rupali, Daily Mukto Kantha and Bangladesher Khabar. He has been working at the Daily Bangladesh Post till his death.
A K Hiru was buried at Nirala Graveyard in Khulna city following namaz-e-janaza after Magrib prayers on the premises of Musolman Para Darul Ulum Madrasa.
Before the burial, his body was taken to the Khulna Press Club. A namaz-e-janaza was also held there after Asr prayers. Later, he was given a guard of honour.
Bangladesh Post family expressed deep shock at the death of the Khulna bureau chief of the daily. In a condolence message, Acting Editor of Bangladesh Post ASM A Khaleque and Executive Editor Durjoy Roy conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members of A K Hiru and recalled his contributions in journalism.
President of Khulna Press Club SM Nazrul Islam and general secretary Mamun Reza in a joint statement also expressed deep shock at the death of the senior journalist in Khulna.
