The total population of Bangladesh stands at more than 16.97 crore. Bangladesh Development Research Institute (BIDS) has given this information after verifying the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) report on Monday.
Some 46.7 lakh people, which is 2.75 per cent of Bangladesh's population, were not counted in the Population and Housing Census 2022 of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).
According to the BBS initial census, the total population of the country had a count of 16.51 crore people. A seminar on the report was held at the NEC conference room in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Monday. Director General of BIDS Dr Binayak Sen chaired the programme.
State Minister for Planning Shamsul Alam, Secretary of Planning Department Satyajit Karmakar, Statistics and Informatics Secretary Dr Shahnaz Arefin were also present.
BIDS Director General Binayak Sen said that there was an undercount of 4.98 percent in the census 2001 which dropped to 3.97 percent in the census 2011.
The number of undercounts is higher in urban areas – especially in cities – where, 3.70 percent of the population was skipped from the census.
Besides, 2.79 percent of the female population was skipped against a 2.67 percent undercount among the male population.
Moreover, the 2.75 percent of undercount was reported in case of Muslims against 2.68 percent of followers of other religions.
On July 27 last year, the preliminary report of the first digital census and household census 2022 implemented through BBS was released. BBS report said at that time, the population of Bangladesh was 16.51 crore.
Among them, 8.17 crore were men, 8.33 crore women and 12,629 third gender.
The report also said that the population of the country was 71.5 million in the first census held in 1974 after independence. Then in 1981, the total population increased to 8.71 crore.
In 1991, the total population of the country increased to 10.63 crore.
The fourth census and household census was conducted in 2001, when the population increased to 12.24 crore.
According to the fifth census held in 2011, the country's population has increased by 14.4 crore. In the sixth digital census and household census 2022, the population of Bangladesh is now 16.51 crore.
