‘Bangladesh is an example to the world in women empowerment’

Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun on Saturday said that Bangladesh is an example for the whole world in empowering women. 

‘Half of our population is female and women's participation in economic activity has increased significantly in recent years. It became possible as a result of the formulation of women-friendly policies and programmes by the current government under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” the Minister said this while addressing as a chief guest of a programme at Westin Hotel at Gulshan in the capital on Saturday. 

The minister said, according to the Global Gender Gap Index Report 2020, Bangladesh is the only one among the seven South Asian countries to be ranked among the top 100 countries. Bangladesh was ranked 50th among 153 countries in the world. The number of working women in Bangladesh increased from 16.2 million to 18.6 million in 2020.

He also said that hundred years ago in Manchester, United Kingdom, in 1924, wives of Rotarians and a group of privileged and pioneer women in the society established the public welfare organization called 'Inner Wheel' for the overall welfare of women through gender equality and women's empowerment, whose branches have spread all over the world including Bangladesh
