Bangladesh called for governments’ strong ambition in Global Plastics Treaty negotiations for tackling the full plastics life cycle.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan, adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change; made the call on behalf of Bangladesh at the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) in Astana of Kazakhstan on Wednesday.
Dipankar Bar, public relations officer of the ministry; provided the information to the Bangladesh Post.
In her speech at the conference, Syeda Rizwana Hasan said the world needs to work together to contain plastic contamination. “We have an opportunity to push together for an ambitious Global Plastics Treaty. We need to work together on biodiversity conservation and protection of traditional knowledge,” she added.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan further said equally crucial is to value shared waters and develop an equitable regime for protection and utilisation.
In addressing all these challenges, she said that there is an abundance of technology, innovation and human capital that ‘we must tap into and share to the benefit of our peoples’.
Rizwana said the world needs to work together on shared resources, the common utilities such as the shared rivers and forests. “We also need to address our common concerns such as air pollution. Advancing real time data collection and information sharing on best practices will help countries such as Bangladesh break free from the chokehold of air pollution,” she said.
The environment adviser said by working together within CICA, all need to contribute towards the sustainable future and ensure environmental and climate justice, for every woman and man across villages and towns, for generations to come. “Let us strive together to achieve a zero carbon future,” she added.
The Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) is an inter-governmental forum for enhancing cooperation towards promoting peace, security and stability in Asia.
