Bangladesh and Bhutan are ready to sign the preferential trade agreement (PTA) anytime soon, the foreign ministry said.
This would be the first PTA of Bangladesh with any country, if signed.
This was discussed when new Bhutanese Ambassador Rinchen Kuentsyl called on Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Thursday.
The Foreign Minister emphasized on increasing trade and economic cooperation between the countries.
Dr Momen said: "We are proud that the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Bhutan have studied in Bangladesh”.
At present, 15 Bhutanese students have been getting the opportunity to study in government medical colleges in Bangladesh every year for the last 5 years.
In addition, many Bhutanese students are studying in private medical colleges.
Dr. Momen said the education system of private medical colleges in Bangladesh is also of good quality.
He expressed hope that road connectivity between the two countries would be established.
The Foreign Minister also welcomed the decision to hold joint events marking the 50th anniversary of Bhutan's recognition of Bangladesh as an independent state in 1971.
