Officials from Bangladesh Betar, the country’s oldest electronic media outlet, met last Thursday to discuss the potential revival of its Urdu service. The meeting was announced on the organization’s website on that day, following a notice posted the evening before.
Mohammad Salahuddin, the additional director general for programmes, stated, "No decision has been finalised yet. We cannot comment further until a decision is made." Once a decision is reached, it will be approved by the director general and sent to the ministry for an official announcement.
The meeting stemmed from a request by the listed artists to the directorate general of Radio on September 10, seeking the resumption of the Urdu service. The additional director general had called for the heads of various departments in Dhaka to attend the meeting.
Bangladesh Betar’s external services department currently broadcasts five hours of programming daily in Bengali, English, Arabic, Hindi, and Nepali. These programmes are accessible via shortwave (4750 kHz), mobile app, and the website.
The aim of these broadcasts is to enhance Bangladesh’s global image, promote government development efforts, and highlight the nation’s history and culture.
This specialised unit plays a crucial role in connecting with diverse audiences, sharing Bangladesh's heritage with expatriates and international listeners in the Middle East, Europe, and South Asia.
