The 90th birth anniversary of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, wife of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was observed across the country on Saturday (August 8) amid various programmes.
Born on August 8 in 1930 at Tungipara village in Gopalganj, she was killed brutally by the assassins of Father of the Nation on August 15 in 1975. This year’s theme of the day is – ‘Bangamata is courageous symbol of sacrifice and beauty.”
The Women and Children Affairs Ministry arranged various programmes in Dhaka and districts to observe Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib’s birth anniversary. Different social and cultural organisations including the Awami League also observed various programmes on the occasion.

A prayer ceremony and discussion meeting was held at the CCC Theater Institute in the city in compliance with hygiene rules under the chairmanship of Acting President of Metropolitan AL unit Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury.
Speaking on the occasion, Chittagong Metropolitan Awami League unit GS AJM Nasir Uddin said, “Fazilatunnesa gave courage to Bagabandhu from behind to become the greatest Bengali of all time. She also played a key role in making the Prime Minister a world leader”.
Chittagong Metropolitan AL unit VP Nayem Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Altaf Hossain Chowdhury Bachu, Advisory Council members Shafar Ali, Sheikh Mahmud Isa, Joint Secretary MA Rashid and others were present.
In Khulna, on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatun Nesha Mujib, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated a program organized by the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs to distribute sewing machines among helpless women in Khulna and provide financial assistance on mobile phones through video conferencing from Ganobhaban.
On behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Khulna Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Helal Hossain handed over sewing machines to 12 women in the metropolis. Additional Deputy Commissioner (Overall) Golam Mainuddin Hasan, General Secretary of Mahanagar Awami League MDA Babul Rana, Freedom Fighter Professor Alamgir Kabir and Deputy Director of the District Women's Affairs Officer Nargis Fatema were present.
In addition to sewing machines, twenty women in Khulna were given a financial grant of Tk 2,000 through mobile phones. Besides, sewing machines were distributed to six women in each upazila of Khulna.
In Nawabganj, on the occasion of the 90th birth anniversary of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, food items were distributed among poor people affected by river erosion and floods at the upazila in Dhaka, reports our Nawabganj Correspondent
The foods were distributed at the initiative of Dhaka district Awami League’s Organising Secretary Paniruzzaman Tarun. At the time, he said, Fazilatunnesa was not only Bangabandhu's wife, she was one of the behind-the-scenes inspirers in the liberation struggle of Bengalis.
Later a prayer was held to ask salvation of the souls of all the martyrs killed on 15 August.
Freddom Fighter Nasir Uddin, AL leaders Md Abdul Haque, Gias Uddin Khan, Humayun Kabir, Fishermen League President Faruk Mollah and others were present at the discussion program and food distribution held at Melang village of Kailail union of the upazila.
In Brahmanbaria, as part of Bangamata’s birth celebration, symbol of sacrifice and beauty, sewing machines were distributed as well as a discussion meeting and prayer mahfil were held at Nabinagar Upazila Parishad conference room under the chairmanship of Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Masum, reports our Nabinagar Correspondent.
Upazila Parishad Chairman Mohammad Moniruzzaman Monir was the chief guest. District Council members Professor Nurunnahar Begum, Aceland Iqbal Hasan, Women's Affairs Officer Jasmine Ara, Press Club President Mahbub Alam Liton, Journalist Sanjay Saha and many others were present there.
