A mural of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is being constructed in Savar, on the outskirts of the capital.
The mural is being built at Muktir Mor Square of Savar aiming to uphold ideal of Bangabandhu to next generation as well as a sign of respect to the great leader of the country. A fountain is also being constructed with mural at the place.
Savar Municipality has taken the project of constructing the Bangabandhu Mural and fountain. Renowned sculptor Mrinal Haque is making the mural and fountain.
State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr Md Enamur Rahman inaugurated the construction work of the mural and fountain on Thursday. At the same time, the name of the ‘Muktir Mor’ renamed as ‘Bangabandhu Square’.
Dr Md Enamur Rahman said, “We are really pleased to take such a project in Savar. There are many murals of Bangabandhu in various places of the country. But even though we are so close to the capital we did not have it here. I hope that the next generation who didn’t see Bangabandhu will be able to think about Bangabandhu and cherish his ideal and our great Liberation War.”
He also said that the decision of constructing the mural and fountain was taken after discussion with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The construction work of the project will end within a month and its construction cost has been estimated Tk 38 lakh, he added.
Talking to the Bangladesh Post over the issue, Manjurul Alam Rajib, Chairman of Savar Upazila Parishad, said that Savar is an important area. Jatiyo Sriti Shoudho (National Martyrs’ Memorial) is located here. There is a lot of history associated with Savar but there is no any sculpture or mural of Bangabandhu in the important area. So the decision of setting up mural of Bangabandhu at Savar has been taken.
Abdul Gani, Mayor of Savar municipality, said that none of the member of Awami League who has been elected mayor of this municipality before. So they never thought about Bangabandhu. ‘But there was a plan for doing something for Bangabandhu since when I was elected. Lastly, we are able to do something for Bangabandhu,’ he added.
