Bus owners and workers have blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Brahmanbaria, demanding a ban on three-wheelers.
They held the programme on Wednesday from 10:15 am to 10:45 am at the Sarail-Bishbrod intersection in Brahmanbaria. As a result of the blockade, the traffic on the highway was closed for about half an hour. At this time there was severe traffic jam.
At around 10:15 am, a protest procession led by Mohammad Hanif, general secretary of the district bus-minibus owners' association and Niyamt Khan, secretary of the local bus management committee, left the Sarail-Bishbrod roundabout.
Slogans were chanted against the highway police demanding to stop the movement of three-wheeled vehicles on the highway from the procession. Protesters later blocked the highway. As a result, the traffic was stopped and severe traffic jam was created.
Later, the administration lifted the blockade after receiving a seven-day ultimatum, but traffic on the highway resumed at 10:45 am.
Mohammad Hanif, general secretary of the district bus-minibus owners' association, said the movement of three-wheelers on the highway has been banned by the high court. But by managing the highway police, three-wheeled vehicles are plying freely on the highway. This often leads to accidents.
