‘Autoshim’ yield in Jibannagar profits farmers

Farmers in Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga are reaping huge benefits by cultivating early varieties of beans. Autoshim, a modified variant of bean is being sold at 120 to 130 tk per kg. Bean farmers in this area are taking 80 to 90 thousand tk at home from per bigha of land. At present, farmers have started cultivating various varieties of beans including Autoshim, Chocolate bean and Rupban bean. The price is also good, the yield is also good. As a result, farmers are having bumper yield in the region.

Talking to 15 bean farmers including Alfaz Uddin, Alauddin, Nuruzzaman, bean farmers of Kultala village of Jibannagar upazila, they said that all kinds of beans including early variety beans are being planted in Jivannagar upazila. Farmers said that they are getting more profit by planting early variety beans.

Farmers in the area said that Autoshim trees and leaves have green flowers and the fruits are colorful. The magnificent purple flowers on the trees and the creeping trees give it the name of Autoshim. Although beans are not usually cultivated at other times of the year except winter season, Autoshim has now become popular among the farmers of Jibannagar Upazila.

Farmers in Autoshim farming in this area are now having huge profit. Amjad Hossain is one of the farmers who have been interested in bean cultivation. He along with other farmers are also getting good prices in the market by caring for bean plants in this season.

He has been planting this specific variant of bean for a long time. After three months of sowing seeds at the end of summer season, his bean field is now in full bloom. 

At the beginning of the month of Bhadra, Amjad Hossain's bean trees have yielded. He said that he has already been able to sell some beans in the market and got the expected price.

Bean farmer Liaquat Hossain said that he has planted beans in 5 and a half bighas of land. The yield has also been good. He is selling 10 to 15 kg of beans in the market every week. The price is getting better. Seeing his bean cultivation, many people in the area are now cultivating different varieties of beans including Autoshim, rupban beans, chocolate beans.

This year Liaquat Hossain invested around Tk 20,000 to Tk 25,000 in Autoshim seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and labor wages. He earns 2 to 2.5 lakh Tk by selling these beans every year. 

He said the number of bean farmers will increase with the help and advice of the Upazila Agriculture Department.

Talking to many people including Abdul Razzak, Kasem Ali and Nazrul Islam, they said that they are setting up bean warehouses in different areas of the upazila and buying various varieties of beans including Autoshim and Rupban beans from the farmers.

Jibannagar Upazila Agriculture Officer Sharmin Akhter said Autoshim is basically a winter vegetable. But now it is being cultivated all year round. At present bean has been planted in 145 hectares of land in Jibannagar upazila. They are currently selling early varieties of beans at 120 to 130 Tk per kg. Farmers are always being encouraged by the Upazila Agriculture Department to increase bean production. 

If Autoshim and Rupban bean and chocolate bean seeds can be collected well in the monsoon season, the cultivation of such beans will increase in future. She further said that although the cost of auto and Rupban bean cultivation is comparatively higher, the market price of this bean is also higher. As a result, farmers are also showing interest in cultivating Autoshime.
