At least two police personnel were injured during a clash between the autorickshaw drivers and police at Doyaganj in the capital.

The clash ensued as several hundred autorickshaw drivers staged demonstrations blocking the road for two and a half hours.

The autorickshaw drivers took to the street a day after the High Court ordered the authorities concerned to stop operation of battery-run rickshaws on the streets in the capital within three working days to reduce road accidents.

Witnesses said, the rickshaw drivers blocked the main road at Doyaganj with a demand of driving battery-operated rickshaws on the main streets across the city.

During the protest, traffic came to a halt on the both sides of the road. Police requested the drivers to clear the road.

Instead of withdrawing the blockade, they locked in clashes with the police, witnesses said.

Jatrabari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Faruk Ahmed told reporters that they brought the situation under control.  Additional police forces were deployed in the area to maintain the law and order, he added.

On Tuesday, the High Court ordered that battery-operated rickshaws be banned in Dhaka city within three days. The Home Secretary, Local Government Secretary, Inspector General of Police, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner, and authorities of the two city corporations in Dhaka have been instructed to implement the order within the next three days.
