JnU teachers’ association polls

Attractive manifesto, no implementation

Published : 18 Dec 2023 08:43 PM

It has been almost a year since Prof. Dr. Md. Ainul Islam and Prof. Dr. Md. AKM Lutfar Rahman were elected as the President and General Secretary of Jagannath University Teachers Association (JnUTA) election respectively. During the whole term, that committee's activities were not only dissatisfactory but also questionable in terms of what welfare they have done for the teachers.

Instead of doing welfare for the teachers and the university they were engaged  in irrelevant activities to get posts in university administration and to dominate over others.

Allegations of repeated unethical pressures have been raised against the leaders. They used to force former Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Md. Imdadul Haq, and former Treasurer, Prof. Dr. Kamal Uddin Ahmed to execute their unethical motives. Instead of focusing on research or academic pursuits, they used to take advantage of their position to fulfill their personal agendas.

Though they declared an attractive manifesto before the election, they haven’t implemented most of it. The implemented tasks do not seem to be on the merit rather they have done them just to keep the words anyway. Some teachers feel uncomfortable and embarrassed about those activities.

The committee though did publicity about the set up of the teachers lounge, the food price is sky touching. Teachers raise allegations that the leaders of the committee are behind for the high food price.

Even though the manifesto announced the implementation of the university statute, it is still ineffective.

The president and the secretary of the committee assaulted a teacher of the university in a meeting of the university academic council. For that disgusting incident they were heavily criticized.

One of the points of the manifesto was to assure the entry rights for all university teachers into Turnitin software. Despite the high importance of this matter for research, the teacher's association struggled to implement this crucial software even after a year. Many teachers are using the software at personal expenses. Although the launch of "Bangabandhu Fellowship" was announced for higher education, its implementation remains unrealized.

Although the teachers' association was behind in the race of assurance and implementation, it was not behind in the race of occupying administrative posts. Teachers association president and general secretary behaved aggressively to get appointment as vice-chancellor and treasurer. They sent several statements to the late vice-chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Imdadul Haq to postpone syndicate meeting while he was in the hospital ICU.

To get the Treasurer  post the teachers association leaders spreaded rumors against the former Treasurer Prof. Dr. Kamaluddin Ahmed.

Some teachers of the university said that the teachers association is busy in achieving their goals. Instead of demanding the arrangement of the Syndicate meeting, they demanded it to be postponed due to personal interests. Other teachers don't know about the teachers association leaders’ activity.

The president of the teachers' association, Prof. Dr. Md. Ainul Islam said, "We have tried to implement the assurances. Some things have not been implemented. It is not that we have been able to work completely."

General Secretary Prof. Dr. AKM Lutfar Rahman said, “We are not completely satisfied. However, I have tried hard enough to implement the demand.”
