The formality of Durga Puja, the biggest festival of Hindu community, will begin in the second week of October with ‘Shoshti Puja’.

On this occasion, the potters of Chatmohar upazila in Pabna are spending busy time in making Durga idols. They are working day and night to supply the idol within the stipulated time.

According to Chatmohar Upazila Puja Celebration Parishad, preparations are underway for performing Durga Puja at 55 mandaps in Chatmohar this time. This year the number of mandaps increased by 7 as Durga Puja was performed at 47 mandaps in the upazila last year.

Most Durga idols are made by the potters of Belgachhi village in Chatmohar upazila. Besides, Durga idols are also made by the potters of Bonthar, Mulgram villages and of Baluchar mahalla under Chatmohar municipal area.

Satyen Chakrabarty, an idol artisan from Bonthar village, said he has been making idols for about 35 years. This year he got the job of making 15 idols. So, his family members are also helping him to complete the work in time for the Puja.

Depending on the size, the price of an idol varies from Tk 20,000 to Tk 100,000. The price of idols has not gone up as much as the price of clay, bamboo, twine, color, hair and idol decoration, Satyen added.
