Arsa member held in Cox’s Bazar, 5 firearms seized

Police have arrested a top member of the separatist group Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (Arsa) from Ukhia Rohingya camp in the district and seized five firearms. 

Based on secret information, a team of Armed Police Battalion (APBn-14) conducted an operation in the extended part of Rohingya camp No. 20 in Ukhia on Wednesday night and detained top Arsa member Abdullah, son of Modasser of block D/51 in camp No. 3.

During the operation, five local and foreign weapons have been recovered from him, said Superinten­dent of Police Md Arefin Jewel, the deputy captain of APBn-14.

He gave this information at a press briefing organised at the office of APBn-14 in Ukhia on Thursday afternoon.

In the press briefing, he said the members of the terrorist group are planning to create new instability and sabotage in the Rohingya camp of Bangladesh by taking advantage of the ongoing war-conflict in Myanmar's Rakhine state. 

Recently, the Rohingya-based terrorist groups have been causing clashes and tensions in Rohingya camps. 

It was informed in the press briefing that APBn-14 received intelligence information that Arsa's top member Abdullah is staying in camp no. 20. On receiving information, a team of APBn police arrested him from a shed in the camp on Wednesday and recovered two foreign pistols and two rounds of bullet from him. 

After extensive questioning, on the basis of the information given by him, police conducted a raid in the slope area of Lal Pahar adjacent to the Rohingya Camp no. 20 last night and recovered locally-made one large shooter gun, two medium-sized one shooter gun and 20 rounds of bullets from the place.

The arrested Arsa member Abdullah was accused of creating unrest and sabotage in the camp. 

It was mentioned in the press briefing that there are a total of eight murder cases against him. 

In a press briefing, Superintendent of Police Arefin Jewel said any attempt to create sabotage in the camps centring the war-conflict in Rakhine will be prevented. The police camp is alert in this regard.
