Chief of Army Staff General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed was adorned with the "16th Colonel of the Regiment" of the East Bengal Regiment (EBR) of the Bangladesh Army Wednesday.
The army chief took over the charge as the Colonel of the Regiment of the EBR in accordance with the military tradition and customs at a reception programme held at the Shahid MR Chowdhury parade ground of the East Bengal Regimental Centre at Chattogram Cantonment, said an Inter-Services Public-Relations (ISPR) press release.
At the ceremony, the Senior Commander of the EBR and the Master Warrant Officer adorned the army chief with the rank badge of “Colonel of the Regiment”.

Earlier, a smart contingent of the EBR gave a guard of honour to General Shafiuddin Ahmed when he reached the parade square.
Senior military officials of the Army Headquarters, Army Training and Doctrine Command, local formations and East Bengal Regiment were present at the event.
Addressing the ceremony, Army Chief General Shafiuddin gave directives for the military officials and then he paid homage to the great architect of the country's independence and the greatest Bengali of all time Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
He said the heroic fighters of the EBR set an example of patriotism by participating in the war of independence in 1971.
Later, the Army Chief placed a floral at a memorial monument 'Azana Shaheed Samadhi' constructed at East Bengal Regimental Centre commemorating the martyred heroes of the East Bengal regiment during the War of Independence.
At the end of the function, General Shafiuddin addressed the 34th Annual Commanders' Conference of the EBR and gave directions on the development of the regiment, enhancement of professional skills and activities of the army home and abroad.
