Archers bring six golds

Bangladeshi archers participating in the ongoing South Asian Games in Nepal bagged six gold medals from archery on Sunday. The six gold medals came from the men’s and women’s recurve and compound team events along with recurve and compound mixed team events.

Bangladesh bagged all six gold medals from as many final team events held in archery at the 13th South Asian Games at the Pokhara Stadium in Nepal on Sunday. Bangladesh men’s recurve team comprising of Mohammad Ruman Shana, Mohammad Tamimul Islam and Hakim Ahmed Rubel clinched the gold medal in the team event of archery competition. They beat Ravien Kavisha Dalpatadu, Sajeev De Silva and Kumara Herath of Sri Lanka in the final.

Bangladesh women’s recurve team comprising of Eti Khatun, Mehnaz Aktar Monira and Beauty Roy beat Thisari Madushika Silva, Rehana Tayabally and Malsha Dilhani of Sri Lanka in the women’s recurve team final to bag the second gold for Bangladesh on the day. Besides, Bangladesh recurve mixed team of Mohammad Ruman Shana and Eti Khatun beat Sonam Dema and Kinley Tshering of Bhutan for the third gold.

In the compound men’s team event, Bangladesh’s Ashikuzzaman, Sohel Rana and Ashim Kumar Das beat Bhutan by 226-213 points to attain gold. Their exploits were followed up by Sushmita Banik, Shyamoli Roy and Soma in the compound women’s event as they claimed the fifth gold in archery for Bangladesh today, beating Sri Lanka by 226-215 points.

In the final team event of the day, Sushmita Banik and Sohel Rana bagged gold in the compound mixed event, beating Nepal by 149-140 points to make it six out of six golds for Bangladesh in archery team events. Last time in SAG 1985, Bangladesh won six gold medals swimming discipline. If archers win one more out of rest four events, today it will set a new record.

With women’s cricket teams gold in the respective event, Bangladesh won a total seven gold yesterday, its highest ever-gold won in a single day for Bangladesh in the 35-year history of the Games. With this, Bangladesh have so far bagged 14 gold medals in the seven-nation 13th Asian Games.

On Saturday, Bangladeshi athletes earned three gold medals, two in weightlifting and one in fencing on the seventh day of the 10-day event in Nepal on Saturday. Famed lifters Mabia Akhter Simanta and Jiarul Islam bagged two gold medals in weightlifting events of the games in Nepalese tourist town of Pokhara while Fatema Mujib clinched the first-ever gold medal for Bangladesh in women’s fencing at Kirtipur Covered Hall in Nepalese capital of Kathmandu.

On December 3, Bangladesh’s athletes clinched three more gold medals in kumite events of karate of the 13th South Asian Games apart from Dipu Chakma’s gold in taekwondo.
