Another dead whale washed ashore at Himchhari Point on Marine Drive Road on Cox's Bazar beach early Saturday morning. It was spotted by the locals near the same place where another giant blue whale’s body was found on Friday.
This whale is slightly smaller in size than the previous Asha whale and has bruises on its body. A large number of people have gathered there to see the whale.
Death whales floated to the beach a little southwest of the Himchhari police outpost on Marine Drive Road on Saturday morning, locals said.
Rafiqul Islam, a resident of the area, said, “I informed the police when I saw a whale while fishing on the beach on Saturday morning.”
Then the news spread quickly and curious people started coming here. People from the forest department and administration visited the spot, he added.
Marine Life expert Zahirul Islam said the whales found on Saturday were of the Brightwell species. The 43-foot-long whale is 14 feet in diameter.
Cox's Bazar South Forest Department Divisional Officer Md Humayun Kabir said that there were signs of injuries on several parts of the whale's body. However, the reason behind their deaths can’t be said now.
Marine expert Mustafa Naeem said whales could be killed if they are hit or killed by a large ship in the deep sea. However, the cause of the death cannot be ascertained at this moment without any investigation or research.
Many environmentalists said that the whales may have died in the water outside Bangladesh and may have floated in this direction.
Deepak Sharma Dipu, president of the Cox's Bazar Forest and Environment Conservation Council, an environmental organisation, said that two whales had floated off the coast of Cox's Bazar in two days. Two whales have bruises on their bodies. From this, it is initially thought that there has been a major disaster in the sea.
In the next few days, there is a possibility of various animals including whales floating in the sea, said the environmental organiser.
Meanwhile, the whale fish rescued from Himchhari Point on Friday was dumped by the Ramu Upazila administration in the sand dunes of the beach in collaboration with the district administration. Later the second one was also buried.
Ramu Upazila Executive Officer Pranoy Chakma said “Since the whale that was rescued on Saturday has fallen in Ramu Upazila, the whale will also be buried on the beach. However, the body parts required for autopsy will be collected before that.”
Deputy Commissioner of Cox's Bazar Md Mamunur Rashid said, "We are seriously monitoring the incident of two whales floating on the beach of Cox's Bazar at intervals of 24 hours."
A committee will be formed soon to find out the reasons behind the deaths, he added.
