The woeful journey in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup of Tigers is going on when they suffered another humiliating defeat to Netherlands on Saturday.
Bangladesh suffered five successive defeats after going down to Netherlands on Saturday when their World Cup 2023 nightmare started with conceding defeat to England after making a winning start against Afghanistan.
Bangladesh saw such a disaster World Cup journey in 2003 in South Africa when they could not win even a match out of their six group matches, though one match was abandoned due to rain.
However, in the only celebration for the Tigers in the ongoing Cricket World Cup was the first match and after that in rest of the matches they had to leave the ground with embarrassing defeats.
Tigers, though went to India with high hope to do something better in the tournament but maybe they would have to return home with worst result, since their first time bitter experiences in 2023, before having the Test status.
Bangladesh had another horrible World Cup experience in 2003 in South Africa when they saw a humiliating defeat to Canada in Darban.
It was the first World Cup for Bangladesh after obtaining the Test status and Bangladesh would have expected a better World Cup performances than their inaugural appearance (1999) but it was a nightmare performance in that tournament losing five out of their six group matches while one was washed out and Tigers finished the group stage as the bottom side.
In 2003, Bangladesh started the tournament with an upset after suffering defeat to Canada, who was first time featuring in the World Cup.
Bangladesh, who placed in Group B along with Sri Lanka, Kenya, New Zealand, West Indies, Canada and the hosts South Africa, returned home without any win suffering five defeats.
After just 20 years interval, Bangladesh saw another World Cup disaster after going down to Netherlands.
In that match in 2003, after bowling Canada for 180 runs, Bangladesh had more worse performances being bundled out for just 120 and lost the match by 60 runs. And this time Bangladesh lost the match by 87 runs when they restricted Netherlands for 229 runs and were all out for 142.
Bangladesh saw the debacle in both the matches due to terrible performances by the batters when opener Hannan Sarker and Sanowar Hossain at the middle were the top scorers with 25 each and against Netherlands on Saturday Mehidy Miraz was the highest scorer with 35 runs when Mahmudullah Riyad and Mustafizur Rahman were second highest scorers with 20 runs each. .
Though, three matches left for Tigers to play when they will have to face off Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia, it would be more than tough to win any of the matches against all former champions.
Bangladesh despite having support at the Eden Garden, Kolkata, as they enjoy at their home, could not take the advantage of crowds backing.
Now it is very much doubtful whether Tigers would end this World Cup journey in frustration.
