Allegations have been raised due to delay in constructing a road culvert a huge area of aman seedlings has submerged by water.
In Mirsharai Upazila, a contractor has been accused of delaying the construction of a road culvert and stopping the water flow of paddy land. As a result, Aman seedlings are submerged under water for about 20 days.
Farmers are not getting the solution even by visiting the doors of the concerned authorities. As a result, they spend their days in anxiety.
On Friday (October 7) morning, several farmers went to Talbaria Railway Station road area of Mirsrai Sadar Union and informed about suffering.
They alleged that the contractor was working throughout the year to construct a culvert of only 12 meters length. Besides, the contractor MN Enterprises constructed a temporary bypass road, causing disruption to the water flow of the local Dhala and Krishna Beel.
In this for about 20 days, about 30 acres of Aman saplings of two neighboring bills have been submerged in water.
MN Enterprises, a contractor owned by Sarwarardi Nizami Naufel, got the work of 12 meters long culvert on Talbaria railway station road at a cost of Tk 55 lakhs. In May of this year, the contractor was given the task to build it.
Local farmer Haji Bashar Uddin complained and said, 25 days ago I planted Aman paddy seedlings in one acre of land in Dhala Bill. Last week’s rains have submerged the whole field of Aman seedlings.
Sarwarardi Nizami Naufel, the owner of the contracting company, said, We have arranged for water drainage through pipes on the bypass road. However, the farmers had to face problems due to the fact that there was huge water in those bills. I also have to incur losses by working on this bridge. The culvert work will be completed within the next week.
When asked, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Minhazur Rahman said that we are in a four-way crisis in this incident. Culvert construction is very important for the road. On the east side of this road is the government food warehouse. At present several important programs including TCB, OMS are going on to supply food to common people. A section of the bypass road could be cut to increase water flow to save the farmers. But if it is cut, government food supply will stop in the upazila.
