Widespread irregularities and corruption have been alleged in the construction of a model mosque at Morichya Bazar in Ukhiya Upazila, Cox’s Bazar.
The mosque, part of a nationwide project initiated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, faced scrutiny after eight pillars collapsed due to reportedly low-quality materials.
Local UP Member M Manjur Alam filed a formal complaint detailing these concerns. Ukhiya Upazila Nirbahi Officer Tanvir Hossain investigated the site, confirmed the allegations, and ordered on Wednesday the immediate halt of construction, demanding a complete restart.
Key local officials, including Upazila Project Implementation Officer Md. Al-Mamun and various UP Members, were present during the inspection. The project was initially overseen by UP Chairman SM Imrul Kayes Chowdhury.
Manjur Alam's complaint highlighted the use of substandard materials and suggested fraudulent supervision by Chairman Chowdhury, leading to significant financial losses.
Engineer Arif, responsible for the construction, attributed the pillar collapse to water accumulation from heavy rains, denying the use of low-quality materials.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Tanvir Hossain emphasised the importance of the model mosque project, stating that any irregularities will not be tolerated. He assured that the mosque will be rebuilt with proper standards to meet the Prime Minister’s vision.
