Education and Planning Adviser to the Interim Government, Professor Wahiduddin Mahmud, has announced that all vacant university vice-chancellor (VC) positions will be filled at the same time. He also mentioned that the existing curriculum and examination methods will continue with the current textbooks, and a circular will be issued soon.
Professor Mahmud expressed concerns about the growing trend of educational institutions being occupied like land grabs. He assured that steps are being taken to address these issues. During a discussion with journalists at his home on Saturday, he raised various administrative issues, including political bias in university appointments, corruption in infrastructure development, and problems in textbook publishing.
The Education Adviser pointed out that over 40 out of 50 public universities in the country are currently without VCs. Other key posts, including pro-vice-chancellors and treasurers, are also vacant. He highlighted the challenges in finding suitable candidates due to past politicization of these positions, making it difficult to attract individuals with the necessary qualifications, administrative skills, and global outlook.
Professor Mahmud emphasized that many qualified teachers are hesitant to take up administrative roles due to the current political culture and fear of being targeted. He also criticized the widespread corruption in university infrastructure development, blaming a powerful group of contractors supported by political influences.
He noted that the search for qualified candidates for various positions, including the UGC Chairman, is ongoing, with many recommendations being reviewed.
Professor Mahmud urged teachers to support those appointed to administrative roles and not view them as competitors. He stressed the importance of restoring integrity and efficiency in the university administration system.
