Ruling Awami League has decided to counter opposition parties in the political field through various democratic programmes.
As part of the decisions, the Awami League on Thursday announced a countrywide demonstration programmes on August 17 in protest against the series bomb attacks carried out across the country during the past BNP-Jamaat-led regime on August 17 in 2005.
Sources said, the ruling party took the decision when BNP and some other political parties launched various protest programmes against the government demanding resignation of the government and formation of a non-partisan caretaker government.
The opposition parties are also observing various programmes protesting the price hike of various commodities, including fuel oil, edible oil, fertilizer and increasing transportation cost as well.
Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader, also the Minister for Road Transport and Bridges, on Thursday in a statement announced the protest programme scheduled to be held on August 17.
In the statement, Obaidul Quader asked all the leaders and activists of the Awami League and its associate bodies to make the programme successful.
He asked all leaders and activists in the central committee, district, metropolitan, upazila, thana, municipal and union levels as well to observe the programme.
It should be noted that on August 17, 2005, during the BNP-Jamaat-led government, a series of bomb attacks were carried out in more than five hundred places across the country. Since then, Awami League has been observing the day as a day of protest against the serial bombing.
Earlier on August 8, Obaidul Quader said that they did not lease the political field to anybody or any party.
“We had been in the streets and still so. We want to face all of them in the streets through democratic way and politically”, he told journalists while he had been asked about ongoing movement by BNP and some other opposition parties.
Meanwhile, Tofail Ahmed, one of the members of the Awami League’s Advisory Council, on Thursday urged the party men from the central committee to the union level to become organised ahead of the upcoming general elections scheduled to be held in 2023.
Tofail Ahmed came up with the call while speaking at a views exchange meeting held in his own district Bhola. The meeting was held in presence of the leaders of all the units of the Awami League and its associate bodies in the district.
