Bangladesh Awami League (AL), one of the country's oldest political parties, has drawn up an elaborate programme to celebrate its 73rd founding anniversary today.
The anniversary programme will begin with hoisting the national and party flags atop all party offices, including the central office, with the sunrises today.
Later, glowing tributes will be paid to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on a small scale by placing wreaths at his portrait on the premises of Bangabandhu Bhaban in Dhanmondi at 8 am.
Besides, a delegation of Awami League Central Working Committee (ALCWC) led by Presidium member Lt Col (retd) Muhammad Faruq Khan will place wreaths at the mausoleum of Bangabandhu at Tungipara in Gopalganj at 10:30 am, maintaining the health protocols.
The delegation will include ALCWC members Iqbal Hossain Apu, MP, and Syed Abdul Awal Shamim.
A discussion will be held at the party's central office in the city's Bangabandhu Avenue at 10.30 am on the day. Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will virtually chair the discussion through videoconferencing from her official Ganabhaban residence.
Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today called upon the party units at different tiers across the country and its associate and like-minded bodies to celebrate the party's founding anniversary through different programmes keeping similarity with the central programmes.
He also urged to maintain the health guidelines during the celebration. Founded on June 23 in 1949, Awami League has been transformed into an organisation of the masses by leading all the democratic-political-social-cultural movements, including the long arduous struggle for freedom and the War of Liberation.
Though the country's biggest political party was floated as Awami Muslim League at the historical Rose Garden at KM Das Lane in Dhaka, the word 'Muslim' was dropped at its third council in 1955.
