A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed ex-minister Advocate Kamrul Islam, also a Presidium Member of the Awami League, on an eight-day remand in a case connected to the murder of Abdul Wadud during the Anti-Discrimination Movement in New Market area.
On Tuesday (November 19), Inspector Md Jahangir Arip of New Market Police Station produced Kamrul Islam before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court, requesting a 10-day remand for interrogation. After a hearing, the court approved an eight-day remand.
Kamrul Islam was arrested on Monday night (November 18) around 10:30 PM from Sector 12 in Uttara, Dhaka.
Meanwhile, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has initiated an investigation into allegations of illegal wealth amassed by Kamrul Islam, his wife, and his children, both domestically and abroad. According to ACC Deputy Director and spokesperson Md Akhtarul Islam, the decision to investigate was made on October 14.
ACC alleged that Kamrul Islam, a former Food Minister, State Minister for Law, and MP for Dhaka-2, accumulated vast illegal assets during his tenure. He is accused of accepting substantial bribes by engaging in corruption and irregularities in the recruitment of lower court employees while serving as State Minister for Law. As Food Minister, he allegedly embezzled government funds by purchasing substandard wheat from Brazil through corrupt practices.
