AL leader attempts to commit suicide on court premises

Sajjad Hossain Barkat, the recently released general secretary of Faridpur city Awami League, tried to commit suicide by setting himself on fire saying that he was going to the bathroom in the court.

He tried to set fire to his lungi with a gas lighter in the court premises on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident took place on the fourth floor of the newly constructed magistrate's court. However, the police in charge of security quickly put out the fire. Although some part of Barkat's lungi was burnt in this incident, he was not physically harmed.

Confirming the incident, Faridpur Additional Superintendent of Police Jamal Pasha said the police were preparing a case against Sajjad.

on Tuesday afternoon, Faridpur number one Amli court judge Md Faruk Hossain Sajjad Hossain Barkat and Imtiaz Hasan Rubel, who was released from the post of president of Faridpur Press Club, were arrested in separate cases. 

Earlier, the same court had taken confessional statements of the accused in two separate extortion cases.

Faridpur Additional Superintendent of Police Jamal Pasha said Sajjad Hossain Barkat was accused of stealing from the house of Faridpur Sadar MP Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain in Badarpur and a seven-day remand was sought for questioning.

The court granted a one-day remand. On the other hand, when Imtiaz Hasan Rubel applied for remand in an extortion case filed by Dulal Lashkar, the court also granted him a one-day remand.
