The ruling Bangladesh Awami League is soon to take punitive action against those who had contested the two city polls in capital Dhaka as rebel candidates, and also worked against party-nominated candidates, said sources. The party sources also said that the party’s policy makers have already started a process to collect information and documents against those rebels and their anti-party activities as well.
The next meeting of the party’s Central Executive Committee will make recommendations on punitive measures against the rebels. Sources in the party’s policy making level said, punitive measures against the rebels is necessary for the welfare of the party and also its discipline. As long as such types of activities continue, those who do such types of activities would get privileges while those dedicated to the party as leaders, workers or supporters will be confused and get frustrated.

Moreover, inaction against the rebels will also reflect the party’s internal weakness, said the sources. The sources also said, to remove the weakness, councils of the party’s thana and ward levels in capital Dhaka will be held and punitive measures will be taken through the root-level councils.
Before the councils, the Central Executive Committee meeting will make recommendations on punitive measures against the rebels. It should be mentioned that the elections to the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) were held on February 1 this year. Although both the mayors were elected from the Awami League, many of the party candidates in the Ward Council elections could not win due to the candidature by a large number of rebels in the party.
There are 75 general Ward Councillor posts in the DSCC and 25 posts for women as reserved seats while 54 general Councillor posts in the DNCC and 18 posts for women as the reserved seats. Of them, at least 62 rebel candidates had contested for 49 Ward Councillor posts in two city corporations and at least 16 of them won the elections defeating the party nominated candidates.
A presidium member of the Awami League said, a process of collecting information and documents about the rebels already has been started and the next meeting of the party’s Central Executive Committee will make recommendations on their punishment.
