The twelfth national polls were held in Jhenaidah in a peaceful environment where no major incidents had taken place. Three Awami candidates contesting with Boat symbol had bagged three seats, while an independent candidate contesting with Eagle had bagged single seat in the 12th national polls held on Sunday (January 7). The independent candidate was Naser Sharier Zahedi Mahul of Jhenaidah- 2 seat.
Newly elected lawmakers are Abdul Hyee from Jhenaidah-1 (Shailkupa) seat, Naser Sharier Zahedi Mahul of Jhenaidah- 2 seat, Major General (Retired) Salah Uddin Miazi of Jhenaidah-3 seat and Anwarul Azim Anar of Jhenaidah-4 (Kaliganj and part of Jhenaidah), confirmed returning officer in Jhenaidah SM Rafiqul Islam on Sunday night.
District returning officer sources said, Jhenaidah-1 seat candidate and incumbent lawmaker fighting with Boat Abdul Hyee had bagged 95,674 votes, while his nearest candidate Nazrul Islam Dulal contesting with Truck bagged 79,728 votes.
In Jhenaidah-2 seat incumbent lawmaker contesting with party’s symbol Boat was defeated badly when he was able to secure 116,207 votes, while the winning candidate Naser Sharier Zahedi Mahul contesting with Eagle had bagged 136,778 votes in hard contest.
Major General (Retired) Salah Uddin Miazi of Jhenaidah-3 seat fighting with Boat was declared elected bagging 83,015 votes, while his nearest candidate incumbent lawmaker Shafiqul Azam Kahn Chanchal fighting with Truck had bagged 64,909 votes.
Incumbent lawmaker in Jhenaidah-4 seat Anwarul Azim Anar was declared elected bagging 95,907 votes, while his rival candidate Abdur Rashid Khokan fighting with Truck bagged 57,094 votes in the elections. District returning officer SM Rafiqul Islam confirming the information said they were elected unofficially.
