Admission preference for colleges in Sylhet declines

Published : 06 Jan 2023 08:46 PM

Online application of colleges started on December 8 after the release of SSC and equivalent exam results. Which ends on December 15.

According to the rules, the students who want to get admission have to apply online to the 10 colleges of their choice. However, students claim that there are no good ten colleges to choose in Sylhet. The 11th class admission program will start all over the country including Sylhet from January 22. Classes will start on January 26. Apart from a few colleges in Sylhet division, students and parents fear that if they get a chance in the rest of the colleges, they will have to get admission to substandard colleges.

This year 1 lakh 15 thousand 391 students have passed the secondary school certificate (SSC) examination in Sylhet board. Out of this, 7 thousand 565 got GPA-5 and 23 thousand 970 got GPA-4. Even if there is no uncertainty about admission, students with good results and their parents are worried about getting a chance in a good college. As there are limited seats in 10 colleges of Sylhet division known as standard, there is concern about admission in desired colleges. It is known that although there is no shortage of seats at the higher secondary level, but the number of seats in good colleges is limited.

Quality colleges in Sylhet are Sylhet MC College, Sylhet Government College, Government Women's College, Jalalabad Cantonment Public School, and College, Border Guard Public School and College, Government Agragami Girls' High School and College, Sylhet Government Pioneer Girls High School and College, Sunamganj Government College, Sunamganj Government Women's College, Habiganj Government Brindavan College, Habiganj Government Women's College, Moulvibazar Government College, Moulvibazar Government Women's College, BAF Shaheen College. The number of seats in these colleges is a little over ten thousand, which is one-third of the student demand. As a result, many students are afraid of not getting a chance, and at the same time, if they do not get a chance, many of them are also afraid of not getting into a quality college later.

Especially the students in the science department are in more trouble. Among the 23 thousand 230 students who passed this year, 6 thousand 894 got GPA-5 and 11 thousand 451 got GPA-4. There are about 3000 seats in the science department in good colleges in Sylhet. Despite good results in this category, there is uncertainty among many about the expected college admissions.

Jasmine Begom from the Lalabazar area of South Surma has passed SSC this year. She wants to get admission into MC College. However, she is worried about admission to MC College as the number of seats is limited. She said, what will happen with good results if you don't get the chance? The same apprehension of her guardian.

To eliminate the admission problem, the students demanded that the colleges increase the number of seats, but the college principals says that the number of quality colleges should be increased, besides increasing the seats. Seats of good colleges in Sylhet do not match demand. As a result, students are deprived of getting admission to the good colleges they expected. For this reason, it is also necessary to increase the seats of prestigious and ancient educational institutions. Seats should be increased in standard colleges without sanctioning any new institution in Sylhet. At the same time, effective initiatives should be taken to increase the quality of other institutions.

Sylhet MC College Principal (Acting) Professor Ashraful Kabir said, many students prefer this MC College to be a traditional college. Nevertheless, due to the fixed number of seats and priority given to good results, many meritorious students do not get a chance. Besides, those who are in various quotas are given preference. There is no opportunity to increase the number of seats in the college. The power of increasing the number of seats is on the education board. The board can increase the number of seats if desired.

Sylhet Education Board Controller of Examination Professor Arun Chandra Pal said that colleges have enough seats for students. However, it is not logical to try to get admission to limited colleges. A good student can get good results from any college. We are often discussing and interacting with the authorities of various colleges to improve the quality of their education. At the same time, I suggest increasing the number of seats in the science and commerce department. Since Sylhet's humanities department scores are getting worse, there is a need to increase the number of seats in the science and commerce department.

He felt that students should be encouraged to study in the science and commerce departments. In addition, it should start in class 9. If those involved in the educational institutions are a little more responsible and improve the environment of the colleges, then the quality of education will be better. At the same time, students will also show interest in getting admission to those colleges.
