Adivasi community demands restoration of quota in govt jobs

Alik Mri, convener of the Adivasi Quota Conservation Council, has put forth three crucial demands aimed at securing fair opportunities for tribal communities in government employment.

The demands were unveiled in a written statement during a press conference held at Dhaka University's Madhur Canteen on Sunday morning.

Alik Mri highlighted ongoing challenges faced by tribals, stressing the need for clarity in defining backward castes and the impact of recent quota abolitions. He expressed concern over the dwindling representation of tribals in government roles, despite past recommendations.

Emphasising the constitutional right to a 5 percent quota, Alik underscored its importance in fostering sustainable and inclusive development for marginalised groups in Bangladesh. He called for immediate restoration of the quota to prevent further inequalities.

The council's three-point demand to the government includes reinstating the 5 percent quota for tribals in first- and second-class government positions, ensuring accurate identification of backward indigenous groups for quota implementation, and improving educational facilities in tribal areas.

Alik announced plans for a rally and march at Dhaka University's Raju sculpture on July 16 to advocate for these demands and uphold equality for tribal communities.
