Resigns amid allegations of brutal orders

Awami League government faces serious accusations after Additional Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Md Moniruzzaman announced his voluntary retirement from the Bangladesh police force.

In his August 11 resignation letter, he delivered a biting indictment of the government's purported abuse of power and its effect on law enforcement.

Moniruzzaman, who is currently stationed with the Tourist Police in the Khulna-Barisal Division, cited a deep-seated dissatisfaction with his role and the public perception of the police. In his resignation letter, he described a climate of systemic abuse and unethical practices, attributing them to directives from high-ranking Awami League officials.

The DIG’s application accuses the government of falling into disrepute following the August 5 student uprising. Over the past decade, he claims, Awami League ministers have enforced illegal orders that

resulted in violent crackdowns on civilians, including children and teenagers.

Moniruzzaman alleges that these orders, aimed at extending the government's power and accumulating illegal wealth, have led to numerous unnecessary deaths perpetrated by field-level policemen under duress from their superiors.

"I have come to the realisation that it is no longer appropriate for me to continue serving in the Bangladesh Police Force," Moniruzzaman wrote. He expressed a profound sense of disillusionment, stating that he is unwilling to remain in a role that he believes fosters public hatred.

In his resignation, Moniruzzaman requested formal acceptance of his resignation and urged the relevant authorities to process his departure promptly. His dramatic exit and the serious allegations contained in his application have sparked widespread discussion about the integrity of law enforcement and the political influence over police operations in Bangladesh.
