A Dhaka court on Thursday placed Abdullahel Kafi, an additional superintendent of police, on a five-day remand in connection with the death of Sheikh Ashabul Yamin, a university student, during the quota reform movement at Savar Bazar bus stand on July 18.
Yamin was a student at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) in Mirpur.
Dhaka Judicial Magistrate Md Julhas Uddin issued the remand order after the investigation officer, Md Abdulla Biswas, an inspector of Savar Police Station, produced Kafi before the court, seeking a seven-day remand.
Prior to this, Kafi had been shown arrested in the case following the submission of an application by the investigation officer.
Kafi was also brought before a separate Dhaka court after completing an eight-day remand in a separate case filed with Hazaribagh Police Station for the 2019 abduction of Engineer Arif Mynuddin.
In the remand plea, the investigation officer stated that Kafi’s involvement in the killing had been confirmed and further interrogation was necessary to gather more information about the incident and identify others responsible.
The defense, however, submitted an application seeking bail and cancellation of the remand, arguing that their client had no involvement in the incident. After hearing both sides, the magistrate denied the defense's application and granted the remand.
Kafi was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police at Dhaka airport on September 2, and the following day he was placed on an eight-day remand in the abduction case. On September 9, Kafi was suspended from his position.
The case was initially filed by the victim's uncle, Abdullah Al Kabir, on August 25, at the court of Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Saiful Islam. The case was lodged against 49 individuals, including Hasina, former Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, and Kafi.
