A Jahangirnagar University student, who allegedly took part in the killing of former Chhatra League leader Shamim Molla, has been arrested from Rajendranagar area in Gazipur.
Police arrested the accused in the early hours on Sunday. The arrestee is Mahmudul Hasan Raihan, 20, a student of the 50th batch at the English department of the JU. He is the third among the eight named accused in the murder case.
Abu Bakar Siddiq, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ashulia Police Station, confirmed the matter. He said that a team of police conducted a raid at Hotapara area of Gazipur and arrested Raihan from his aunt’s house.
The OC, however, said that the other seven accused were on the run. Sudipta Shaheen, the deputy registrar of the JU’s security section, filed the case with Ashulia Police Station on Thursday night, alsoaccusing 20 to 25 unidentified suspects. The JU administration suspended a total of eight students of the university.
Apart from the listed accused, police arrested a BCL leader named Habibur Rahman Habib from Dhamrai area in Dhaka early on Friday to interrogate him over the death.
Shamim Molla, who was a former student of history department and organising secretary of JU unit BCL, was attacked near the Prantik Gate of the university around 5:50pm on September 18.
