Renowned educationists at a programme on Monday called for ensuring world-class education at the college level to keep pace with the competitive world and build a developed nation.

Higher education in the country will not reach the desired goal until and unless the college education is modernised, they said, adding that the government should prioritise the higher education and increase budgetary allocation in this sector.

The opinion was conveyed at a meeting of an expert committee for formulating strategic plan for education at the college level under College Education Development Project (CEDP) held at the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC).

The educationists noted that the formulation of a particular strategic plan is urgent for development of college education.

Quality textbooks need to be written by expert teachers at the college level so that these sustain for at least 20 years.

Baseline study is also imperative to determine the existing situation of science education being imparted by college, they said.

With UGC Member Professor Dr Muhammed Alamgir in the chair, the meeting was attended, among others, by Professor Dr Munaj Ahmed Noor, Vice-chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Digital University; Professor Dr Subrata Kumar Adittaya of Electrical and Electronic Engineering department of Dhaka University (DU); Professor Dr Md Mahbubul Alam Joarder of the DU IIT department; Professor Dr Hasina Khan of DU Biochemistry and Molecular Science department; Professor Dr Lafifa Jamal of DU Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering department; Professor Dr Mohammad Kaikobad of Computer Science and Engineering department of Buet; Professor Dr Silia Shahnaj of Electrical and Electronics Engineering department of BUET; Professor Dr Md Hanif Siddiqui of Computer Science and Engineering department of Chittagong University and AKM Mukhlesur Rahman, Project Director of CEDP
