Hassan Abidur Reja Jewel, a beloved name in Bangladesh’s music and TV scene, passed away on Monday after a brave 13-year fight with cancer. He was 56 years old. Jewel was well-known for his soulful voice and his skills in music production. He started his career in the early 1990s when band music was growing in popularity in Bangladesh.
His funeral prayer was held at Azad Mosque in Gulshan after Asr prayers. A second prayer will take place at 6 PM at Channel i’s premises, and he will be buried at Banani Graveyard.
Jewel's early life saw him moving frequently across Bangladesh, which helped him understand different cultures. Encouraged by his parents, he began singing as a child, taking formal lessons in first grade and performing on stage by fourth grade. Even though he loved music, he also worked in TV production to support himself.
Jewel's first album came out in 1992, and he released a total of 10 albums over 28 years. His work with the famous guitarist Ayub Bachchu, who composed seven of his albums, greatly influenced Bangladeshi music. One of his favorite songs was "Amar Ache Ondhokar," which was part of his 1995 album. Jewel later reintroduced this song with a new piano arrangement in 2015.
Some of his other well-known albums include "Ek Bikele" (1994), "Amar Ache Ondhokar" (1995), and "Emon Keno Holo" (2017). His album "Ek Bikele" was particularly famous, earning him the nickname 'Ek Bikeler Jewel.'
Fans and fellow artists, including Elita Karim and Konal, have expressed their sorrow and paid tribute to Jewel. His passing marks the end of an era in Bangladeshi music, but his music and legacy will continue to inspire many.
