A court in Cumilla has rejected the bail petition of Raihan Siddiqui Amman in a case for instigating his classmate Jagannath University (JnU) student Fairuz Sadaf Abantika to commit suicide.

The Senior Judicial Magistrate Court of Cumilla rejected the bail application submitted by the lawyers of Amman on Sunday.

Advocate Syed Nurur Rahman, the lawyer of the plaintiff, said, "The main accused, Amman, used to harass the girl following an inferior incident on the campus day by day. He instigated her to commit suicide. For this reason, we have applied to the court today to reject the bail of the accused Amman.”

“Being Satisfied with our hearing, the court denied bail to the accused and sent him to jail custody”, he added.

The JnU Vice-chancellor Professor Dr. Sadeka Halim did not agree to make any comment regarding the investigation. She informed that the investigation committee is working at its own pace.

Dr. Md. Zakir Hossain, the head of the investigation committee and the president of the university's teachers' association, said, “The investigation committee has received four working days so far. However, work is also ongoing on holidays. The names of two or three individuals have come out and they will be called.”

He also mentioned that it's not possible to provide a comprehensive idea of the progress of the investigation right now.

At night of March 15 last, JnU law department's student Fairuz Sadaf Abantika sent a post to her Facebook page blaming assistant proctor Deein Islam and classmate Amman Siddiqui for her death. Some time after the post, her body hanging with ceiling fan was recovered from her Cumilla city residence.

In connection with the incident, Abantika's mother Tahmina Shabnam filed a case with Kotwali Police Station mentioning that Deen Islam and Amman Siddiqui along with some others had instigated her daughter to commit suicide. Then they were arrested and placed on remand.
