A total of 15 students, who are known as ‘Ora 15 Jon’, at Kaliganj upazila of Jhenidah are working for the betterment of the unprivileged children under the banner of Roddur. The voluntary organisation is providing education for the poor children who do not have parents, or some one’s mother or father left the child due to another marriage.

Vising the children’s school under a Koroigachh (Raintree) tree adjacent to Mobarakganj railway station in Kaliganj town, it was seen that three students have been providing education to a number of children. A white board was hanging on the tree where some 25 children attended the class. Some of the children did not wear any cloth.

Shahed, 10, a learner in the school, said that he lost his father. His mother along with another brother lives at a slum. They beg here and there. He and others attend the class in the afternoon when they finish their begging or other activities. Shahed feels comfort in attending the school free of cost.

Nahid Hasan, founder president of Roddur, said all the 15 organisers are students of college and university. They were shocked when they witnessed that the children were begging or moving with any ill-motive. To bring them in right truck and ensure income generation activities, they organised ‘Roddur’ and started providing education. The members have been spending money for books (khata), pencil, scale and some other educational materials for the learners from their savings.

The organisers provide education for five days a week, while pass another day with the learners for sports or other recreation purposes. Sometimes they provide foods for the minors.
