A new ray of hope for garlic farmers in Jhenaidah

A new ray of hope prevailing on the faces of the farmers in six upazilas of Jhenaidah as the plots were decorated greener with the growing plants of garlic. 

The expected yield of the spicy crop will benefit the farmers and strengthen their socio-economic state partially when they have been receiving better prices in the current season.

Using of modern technology and farming equipment with the support of the agriculture department, has been encouraging the farmers all along, farmers said.

Naimuddin Fakir of Jamsedpur village at Shailkupa municipality of the district said he is very happy to see the satisfactory growth of the tender plants at his plot. 

Naimuddin Fakir said that the farmers in his village are very happy witnessing the growth as well as better prices of the spicy crops like garlic, onion, chili and some other crops in last few years. The farmers in the area have been regaining confidence on agriculture production when they had been incurring heavy losses.

According to the farmer, he is expecting a sum of Tk 125,000 from the one-bigha (40 decimals) of land where he will have to spend Tk 25 thousand for seeds, fertilizer, irrigation and weeding and labour purposes. The net profit from the piece of land will stand at Taka 90 to 95 thousand in 105 to 120 days.

Sub assistant agriculture officer (SAAO) of the department of agriculture extension (DAE) in the block Mosleh Uddin Tuhin said that the farmers have been working on the garlic and other winter crops fields as each and every crop become profit concern for them since past few years.

A source related to DAE deputy director’s office in Jhenaidah, the farmers in Jhenaidah Sadar, Kaliganj,  Kotchandpur, Moheshpur, Shailkupa and Harinakundu already brought 2,596 hectares of land under the garlic farming in the current season as against the DAE target for 2,580 hectares. About 24,000 tones of garlic for an amount of Taka 150 crore is expected to be produced in the season. 

DAE deputy director in Jhenaidah Kripangshu Shekhar Biswas said that the agriculture farming in the district is always profitable as the farmers are almost skilled and trained. They apply latest and modern technologies for boosting production where the field level officials of the DAE ensure support to them make the farming profitable and environment-friendly round the year.
