Celebrated theater icon Mamunur Rashid is set to enthrall audiences this Eid with his latest play titled "Company". This production marks the 66th installment from his renowned troupe, Aranyak Natyadal.
"Company" delves into the historical period of 1744-1757, a time when British imperialism was burgeoning across the Indian subcontinent. Through the lens of theater, Rashid aims to illuminate the subtle dynamics of power struggles, diplomatic maneuvers, and oppression perpetuated by ruling elites, spanning from the British era to the present day.
The play unfolds against the backdrop of England's Yorkshire County in 1744 and culminates in June 1757, capturing the pivotal moment of British colonization in the Indian subcontinent. Rashid particularly focuses on the conflict between Lord Clive and Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah, which ultimately led to the loss of Bengal's independence.
In a statement, Rashid shared his intent to portray the intricate web of conspiracies and upheavals of that era, aiming to encapsulate the socio-political and psychological landscapes under North Indian colonial rule. "Company" will debut at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy's National Theatre Hall at 7:00 pm on Eid day, with
subsequent showings scheduled for four consecutive days at the same venue.
Rashid expressed his commitment to delivering thought-provoking theatrical experiences, noting that he penned the script for "Company" on his birthday this year, aligning its release with Eid festivities.
