Eight suspected robbers were arrested by Begumganj Model Thana police while they were preparing to commit a robbery in Mirwarishpur Union under Begumganj Upazila of Noakhali district on Thursday midnight.
Police also seized a light machine gun (LG), a pipe gun, three knives, a grill cutting machine and other equipment from them.
Based on the information given by the robbers, the law enforcers arrested a goldsmith and recovered over four Bhori of stolen gold from him.
Begumganj Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Nazmul Hasan Rajib gave this information at a press conference on Begumganj Model Police Station premises on Friday afternoon. Begumganj Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Anwarul Islam was also present.
The arrestees are robber leader Kamal and his associates Shamim, Rayhan, Miraj, Sharif, Helal Uddin, Salauddin Sabuj and Rayhan, and goldsmith Ripon.
Police said the robbers came to Lalpur village under Mirwarishpur Union on Thursday midnight and were preparing for a robbery. The police conducted an operation in the area after knowing the news based on secret information. Later, the police arrested the robbers from Lalpur village with the help of villagers. Weapons used in robbery were recovered from them. Later, on the basis of the information given by the robbers during interrogation, goldsmith Ripon was arrested along with the looted gold from Kamolnagar area of Lakshmipur district on the night. It was initially learned that Ripon used to buy and sell the stolen gold.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Begumganj Model Police Station Anwarul Islam said there are multiple cases filed against the arrested robbers with different police stations of Noakhali and Lakshmipur districts.
