A total of 1,850 working pregnant and lactating mothers received allowance in three municipalities of Narail district. Beside, maternity allowances were distributed among the 5,967 mothers in 39 unions under three upazilas in the district.
District Women Affairs Office sources said, a total of 1,850 women received Tk 14 lakh 80 thousand per month as lactating allowance in Narail, Kalia and Lohagora municipalities, and 5,967 women received maternity allowance Tk 47 lakh 73 thousand six hundred in 39 unions under three upazilas in the district. Of them, one thousand lactating allowance receiver women are in Narail Municipality, while 450 in Kalia Municipality and 400 lac in Lohagora Municipality.
Besides 1,989 maternity allowance receiver women in 13 unions of sadar upazila, while 1, 836 in 12 unions of Lohagora upazila and 1,989 in 13 unions of Kalia upazila under the district. Each pregnant or lactating mother received Tk 800 per month as allowance.
District Women Affairs Deputy Director (DD) Md. Anisur Rahman said the mothers along with their infants were given necessary antenatal and postnatal healthcare services for maintaining their sound health and to produce sufficient milk for their growing babies. The poor women receive the lactating and maternity allowance.
Deputy commissioner (DC) of Narail Anjuman Ara told the Bangladesh Post that the lactating mothers need special care, more nutrition and higher calorie than other women as they need more significant quantity of energy as the mother have pivotal role to bring up the newborn babies with sound health, mind and attitude.
To ensure healthy nutritional status during pregnancy and breastfeeding, most of the foods the mothers consume each day should be high in vitamins and minerals, she added.
