72 Constitution no more relevant: Hasnat

Leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on Wednesday said that the Constitution, written in 1972, is no more relevant in Bangladesh following the July-August events of 2024.

“The Constitution, which was written after the Great Liberation War, was basically the Constitution of the Awami League. Under that Constitution, Bangladesh used to be run following the ideals of the Mujib followers. So, that Constitution is no more relevant in Bangladesh following the events of 2024,” Hasnat Abdullah, a key convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, told reporters at briefing at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital on Wednesday.

Underscoring the need for unity, he also called upon the political parties to clarify their stance on whether they support or oppose the Mujib-era's 1972 Constitution.

Terming the 72’ Constitution a ‘fascist Awami League constitution’, he said “If we discard the 1972 Constitution and draft a new one, that constitution will reflect the aspirations of the people.”

Hasnat also said the Bakshal constitution and the current one had become irrelevant and abolishing it would lead to the automatic removal of President Shahabuddin. He also demanded ban on the Chattra

League, the student wing of the AL, labelling it a terrorist organisation, asserting the five-point demand given by the group was their ultimate goal.

The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement pressed a five-point demand, including the resignation of President Shahabuddin within this week.

They also called for cancelling the results of the last three national elections, formulating a new constitution and issuing a new proclamation in the light of the spirit of the July uprising.
