6th death anniversary of Prof Mannan observed

The sixth death anniversary of Professor Dr MA Mannan, known as the father of neuro­logy in Bangla­desh, was obser­ved on Saturday. He was a former Awami League lawmaker of Katiadi-Pakundia constituency in Kishoreganj.  A dua and milad mahfil were held at Masjid E Bakkatil Mubarak Mosque in the capital’s 104, Lake Circus Kalabagan area. Quran Khotom and other dua mahfil were also held at his constituency in different places.

Born on December 2 in 1932, language Movement veteran and Liberation War organiser Dr Mannan died of old-age complications at a Dhaka hospital in 2016.

He joined Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (formerly known as Institute of Postgraduate Medicine and Research) in 1969 and initiated treatment for neurological disorders for the first time.

He was a member of ruling Awami League’s Advisory Council. He left behind three children – sons Ambassador Mosud Mannan, Dr Muzharul Mannan and daughter Zeba Mannan.

Dr Mannan was the founder of Dr Abdul Mannan Women's College in Katiadi and Neurology Foundation in Dhaka.He served twice as the president of Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council. In this capacity, he was instrumental in gaining the recognition of MBBS degree given by medical colleges (DMC & SSMC) in Bangladesh by the relevant authority in the UK. He had developed a new medicine to treat Latherism and Brain Stroke. His wife Prof Bashira Mannan,  a teacher of the Institute of Social Welfare of Dhaka University, passed away in 2005.

 Founder of Neurology Foundation and Epilepsy Association of Bangladesh, Dr Mannan was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2015 for his contributions to education.

He was elected as MP from Kishoreganj-2 seat twice – in 2001 and 2008.
