To ensure the sustainable extraction and preservation of marine fishery resources, 65 days fishing restriction is imposing in the Bay of Bengal of the country. The restriction prohibits fishing of any species by all types of fishing vessels from May 20 to July 23.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister Md. Abdur Rahman confirmed this after a meeting held in the conference room of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock at his office in the secretariat in the capital on Tuesday. The ministry secretary Md Salim Uddin conducted the meeting.
The minister said, “For conservation and sustainable fishing practices, law enforcement agencies will be there. At the same time, support for fishermen will be given through VGF programme. Social campaign will be conducted to increase awareness in this regard.”
Various government departments, district and upazila administrations, law enforcement agencies, and fishing-related organizations are urged to cooperate in implementing the fishing ban. The minister also called for the proper distribution of Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) rice to fishermen as an alternative income or food aid during the ban period. The meeting, attended by officials from relevant ministries, armed forces, law enforcement agencies, and fisheries associations, focused on collaborative efforts to ensure the success of the fishing ban and marine resource conservation initiatives.
