More than 600 people have been killed and over 19,000 people have been injured during the student-led mass movement, according to the health ministry.
The casualties were recorded from July 15 to August 5, the ministry said in a report on Monday.
Over 450 bodies were brought to the hospital, while another 181 others succumbed to their injuries during this period.
The health ministry set up a committee on August 15 to prepare a complete list of people killed and injured during the movement. It reported its findings to the ministry on September 5.
Among the injured, more than 16,000 received treatment at government hospitals and at least 3,000 were treated at private hospitals.
Health Service Division’s former senior secretary and committee chief Muhammad Humayun Kabir said it was challenging to collect information from private hospitals since they don’t preserve data like public hospitals do. In some cases, the victims’ families don’t want to register names out of fear.
Health ministry officials said it is a draft list and that they were updating the data. The list will be published once it’s complete.
According to the report, private clinics of Barishal, Khulna, Mymensingh and Rangpur divisions did not provide any information about those who had received treatment there.
Dhaka division recorded the highest number of casualties (11,000 injured and 477 deaths). In Chattogram, 2,000 people were injured and 43 were killed. According to the report, Barisal had
the least number of casualties (one). The death toll in Khulna is 39. Of those hospitalised, 3,048 were in critical condition, requiring surgery. In addition, at least 535 people have been permanently disabled due to their injuries.
Health ministry officials said that the Management Information System (MIS) under the Directorate of Health is preparing the list of casualties in the movement.
The health ministry is building a website containing the list of martyrs and injured in the student-led uprising. The government hospitals and upazila health officials can give inputs about the fatalities.
At a media conference, the central subcommittee on health affairs of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement said that many victims were buried without death certificates to conceal the true picture of the massacre. Many death certificates claim that none was killed in the shooting.
The student-led movement against discriminatory public sector job quotas turned into a mass uprising that toppled the Sheikh Hasina regime on August 5. An interim government headed by Dr Yunus took charge three days later.
