The government has decided to reopen the educational institution on Sunday (September 12) after closure of one and half years. The educational institutions were closed since March 17 last year due to coronavirus outbreak.
Meanwhile, about 1,000 students of six schools under Ulipur upazila of Kurigram will not be able to return to their beloved institutions as those schools have been washed away due to the high tide and river erosion of Brahmaputra and Tessta rivers.
These ill-fated students might have to get admitted in new schools and adapt to a new environment somewhere else now.
However, the washed away institutions have been shifted and set up somewhere far away.
According to the Upazila Education Office, there are 268 government primary schools in 13 unions and 1 municipal area in Ulipur. The total number of students studying in those schools is 52,325.
In last one and a half years, Kharija Natshala Govt Primary School, Juan Satara Govt Primary School, Char Bajra Govt Primary School, Paschim Bajra Govt Primary School, Nayadara Govt Primary School and Cheragir Alga Govt Primary School have gone under water due to river erosion.
Four more educational institutions of Thetrai and Bajra Union are under threat of being washed away due to the erosion of Teesta River.
With the exception of Paschim Bajra Government Primary School, the other five institutions of the list have been shifted to other places already.
It was learnt that Paschim Bajra School would probably be shifted to a tin-shed room at the house of the headmaster of the school for a temporary period as it has not been allotted a specific place yet.
On the other hand, visiting various institutions of the upazila and talking to the headmasters of those institutes it was learnt that, after receiving letters from the Upazila Education Officer and the Secondary Education Officer, they are making the infrastructure of the institutions and educational materials suitable for teaching.
Ulipur Upazila Education Officer Md Nadiruzzaman said, “We are prepared to reopen every school. The teaching materials and school buildings are ready to welcome the students as per the government instruction. Necessary measures are being taken to teach the students as per the government instructions.”
